Fertile Plains and a Spicy City!
Last month, we began a blog journey into the different regions of Thailand from the mountainous North, to the sandy beaches of the South. This month our exploration into the different regions of Thailand continues with a focus on the central plains region and the bright lights of Bangkok.
We begin this month's journey into the heart of Thailand, the central plains, centered around the Chao Phraya river. The entire country relies on these flat lands to provide the country with enough agricultural land to support the majority of the country's food needs. Rice patties, orchards and vegetable gardens are plentiful here and are cultivated to provide the maximum amount of product all while preserving the land for generations to come.
Much of the fruits, vegetables and flowers harvested in the plains eventually make their way to the city of Bangkok, since it is the hub of all transportation throughout Thailand. This city is also known around the world as one of the most exotic destinations in the world. Bangkok offers newcomers a unique view into the richness of Thailand's culture. The city hails as the headquarters of the Royal Family, the government and the new industrial businesses that are flourishing in today's global market.
In the culinary world, Bangkok is known for having markets offering the freshest products from all regions of the country. Local sellers with produce, meats, spices and flowers make the market a cultural melting pot of sights, sounds and tastes all meant to entice the hungry wanderers.
The people of Bangkok are often very proud of their heritage and show it by creating meals that represent their country's culinary evolution sparked by the boom in immigration centuries ago. Flavors from neighboring countries made a large impact on Thai food and are represented in many dishes that utilize exotic spices and herbs, fresh fruits and vegetables.
Because of this great combination of ingredients and cultures, Thai food is recognized for its bold flavors that harmoniously strike a balance between sweet and spicy. As always, join us to experience the flavors of central Thailand and Bangkok. See you soon!
