The World of Southern Thailand
Mention an area in the southern region of Thailand, and visions of sandy beaches, and crystal blue water quickly come to mind (think Phuket). While these images are spot on for the coastal portions in southern Thailand, there is an entire area of land jutting from the country that reaches down and connects with Malaysia. This land is so vastly different in climate, landscape and culture than any other region in Thailand, it is truly exotic.
Set between two coastlines, the southern arm of Thailand is wet and wild! Markedly different from the lush plains of the north, the southern region is filled with large rubber tree and coconut plantations. Mandrake swamps and trees have roots that stand above the murky water. This very strange environment allows for rare and strange wildlife to flourish. Often in these heavily vegetated areas, rare species of plants and flowers grow sporatically peppering the swamps with splashes of brilliant color.
When the climate and landscape change, so too does the cuisine. Southern Thai cuisine is heavily influenced by many things. Their proximity to Malaysia and other south Asian countries expose this area to a plethora of herbs and spices that travel through the ports. Peanuts and peanut sauces from Malaysia and Indonesia often accompany satays, while spices like cinnamon and star anise from India are ground up and added to local curries.
Another powerful influence is the abundance of coconut plantations, and exotic fruits like mangosteen, jack fruit, and mangoes that grow in abundance and are served with all meals and often take the place of dessert. Lastly, with this area is surrounded by sea, fish, crab and shrimp make up a majority of the local diet.
The people of the South are often thought of as spoiled by the beauty of the surrounding coastline, but in-between each coast lies a untamed jungle of vegetation and swamps lending to the unique and mysterious atmosphere of the area. In studying the different regions of Thailand, I have learned that the essence of a country's culture often lies in the uniqueness of its environment.
